Week 1

Week 1 - Activities

1.Setting
The setting for Whale Pot Bay is the eastern Wairarapa coastline. While Hauruanui is fictional, it is loosely based on the area inland from Castlepoint. Whale Pot Bay itself was created from the structures and rocks that surround Castlepoint. Google Earth has excellent images of the area, which can be viewed by entering: Castlepoint, Wellington. If you can't access Google Earth try Google Maps.

Help contribute to the Discover Castlepoint Doc by adding facts, pictures, maps and links. Make sure you don't repeat information other students or groups have recorded.

2. Facts?
Jake talks about Pygmy Sperm Whales and Sperm Whales.

Watch both video's about the Pygmy Sperm Whale. There is a contradiction in the information. Can you identify it? Which video do you believe and why?

  10. The Pygmy Sperm Whale is a tooth whale found around the world. They weigh around 180 pounds and 9 feet long. They prefer deep tropical waters, they usually feed on crabs, shrimp, fish and squid. They breed in the summer and a baby Pygmy Sperm Whale is born in the next spring. The babes are 120 pounds and 4 feet long.(the seasons might be wrong because the video might be made in a different country) Thanks for reading.

  12. The first one says the spermasety adjusts buoyancy and the second video says the spermasety is used as a controller of sound making these two videos even thought they may not know it a contradicting each other.

It is a bit hard for me to chose which one I believe because the first one at the end of where it lists where the information was got from says Wikipedia (not a website to trust) and the second website although the man seems to be speaking facts he does not seem to know what he is talking about, as in not confident in himself about what he is saying.

Although seeing you can't really trust Wikipedia I choose the second website to believe.

    1. More specific but wrong! The first video is a report not a study.

  18. I believe video 2 because it has a pygmy sperm whale skeleton and I count it as proof.

  19. I think the first one is real because it tells you about the whales apperance and other information. The second one is a little bit real but it only talks about the structure of the body and how the whale died.

  20. I think the first one was true because in the second one the guy didn't seem very sure.
And it was lent to him and he broke its jaw.

  21. I think the second video is correct because the first video says the spermacety thing adjusts buoyancy and the second one controls sound. The second video has a professor talking in it.
